WESTMOORE NEWS AND EVENTS:
Celebration of Reenactment: History Comes Alive at Westmoore Pottery
Saturday, September 20, 2008
9am - 5pm
Join us as Westmoore Pottery hosts those who reenact our past.
Anyone not familiar with the world of reenactment (and those who are, and enjoy it!) will want to come and mingle with the 2nd NC Regiment of the Continental Line. The folks who portray the 2nd NC Regiment will set up an encampment beside Westmoore Pottery, and will be there from 9 am - 5 pm that day, showing the life of the 18th century soldiers and followers.
Also, in the afternoon, Jim Daniel will visit Westmoore Pottery in the persona of an 18th century North Carolina surveyor for Lord Granville. From 2 pm - 3 pm (weather permitting), Jim will present an hour long first-person program in the character of the surveyor. He will explain to visitors what would have been involved in receiving land in central North Carolina in the mid to late 1700s. Jim spent over 10 years researching 18th century surveying, has written a book on the subject, and has performed this same hour long program at sites such as Williamsburg and Mount Vernon. After the program, Jim will be signing (and selling) his book on 18th century surveying.
And, as thanks to all of you who are yourselves reenactors, all reenactors of any part of the time period 1600 - 1850 who visit Westmoore Pottery on this day in period clothing will receive a discount for the day on anything purchased from us.
Stepping Back in Time: Hearthside Cookery at Westmoore Pottery
Saturday, October 18, 2008
9am - 5pm
Join us for an informal lesson on food history!
On this day, two historical cooks from the Backcountry Farm of the Schiele Museum of Gastonia, NC will be doing 18th century cooking in the large fireplace at Westmoore Pottery. They will cook from 10 am to 4 pm. After 4 pm, we will all wash dishes!
Plan to wander in and out throughout the day, so as to watch many different foods being cooked. Samples will be available. See what people in North Carolina cooked and ate in the 18th century, and also how some of those odd pots we make, such as pipkins, were really used.
In addition, from 1 pm - 3 pm, Kay Moss and Kathryn Hoffman will be autographing copies of the cookbook, The Backcountry Housewife: a Study of Eighteenth Century Foods, that they wrote.
For the day, we will offer a discount on all our historical cookbooks.
Heritage Day
Saturday, November 8, 2008
9am - 5pm
Our annual Heritage Day in November commemorates the founding of Westmoore Pottery in November of 1977. Come visit with us this day as we celebrate our own and North Carolina's pottery heritage.
The focus of this year's Heritage Day will be on styles of pottery made in North Carolina from 1755 through about 1840. We will open a couple of kiln loads of pottery this day; the pottery will reflect our day's focus, and will be offered for sale beginning at 9 am.
We'll be demonstrating pottery-making as well throughout the day.
The Westmoore Pottery scrapbooks, which trace us from our 1977 beginnings, will be hauled out and put on display for this day only.
A discount will be offered on all books about pottery history.
In addition, refreshments will be served, and we will give out door prizes throughout the day.
Holiday Open House
Saturday, December 6, 2008
9am - 5pm
Join us as we celebrate the holiday season. The shop will be decorated for the holidays, and we will unload a kiln of pottery for this day, including special pieces.
From 1-3 pm, author Nancy Carter Crump will be signing her newly released updated book, Hearthside Cooking, published by UNC Press.
Refreshments will be served.
