Product Description

18th century redware Philadelphia pipkin on legs, used for hearth cooking.

Glazed on interior only, in a very dark brown glaze.

6 1/2" tall x 5 1/2" diameter at the top.  Capacity is  1 1/2 quarts.

Pipkins should be used either near the fire or else with coals under them.  They are not meant to be used over direct flame; any lick of flame may crack them.

Archaeological evidence suggests that many pipkins were sold both with and without lids -- lid being optional.

This is a new piece of pottery made in the old style, not an antique.
