Product Description

Large redware 18th century Philadelphia pipkin on legs, used for hearth cooking.

Glazed on interior and lid only, in a very dark brown glaze.

Capacity is  5 cups (1/4 quarts), 7 1/4" tall.

Pipkins should be used either near the fire or else with coals under them.  They are not meant to be used over direct flame; any lick of flame may crack them.

Archaeological evidence suggests that many pipkins were sold both with and without lids -- lid being optional.

This is a new piece of pottery made in the old style, not an antique.
